I think there are close ties between these genres. Selene – Do you think Lizzie did it? More broadly, you seem to work well within not just horror, but crime and mystery fiction. Once I read the actual autopsy reports and viewed the photos, I just knew that my fictional take with zombies and horror provided a perfect solution to what was already a ghastly crime. If she was the killer, then she was one of the most devious killers in history. You can’t help but wonder what kind of person she was. Why Lizzie, as an historical figure?Ĭhristine – Lizzie Borden has always been fascinating. Selene – I read a bit of Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter, and found it an interesting historical take on both zombies and the Borden story. I still write for newspapers as well as write fiction. It’s prophetic, I think, as my favorite baby picture has me with a newspaper and they put a pencil behind my ear. Ha! I knew I wanted to be a writer in high school and decided journalism was the best way to do it. Selene – When did you start writing, and why?Ĭhristine – I can’t remember not writing. I love animals, have a dog and even raised dwarf seahorses at one time. I write every day, a habit you can’t help getting when you work in newspapers. Selene – First, tell us a bit about yourself.Ĭhristine – I’m a news junkie (no surprise there.) I like to craft, mostly working on dollhouses and miniatures, hence I’m a packrat, too.

Out here, you had an unimpeded view up to a pocket of Ninth sky. Then came the long hike up twenty-two flights the back way, not one light relieving the greasy dark, heading to the splitoff shaft and the pit where her ride would arrive: the shuttle was due in two hours. This was pure sentiment, as her mother hadn’t been there since Gideon was little and would never go back in it now. Leaving her cell and swinging her pack over one shoulder, she took the time to walk down five flights to her mother’s nameless catacomb niche. Then Gideon whistled through her teeth as she unlocked her security cuff, and arranged it and its stolen key considerately on her pillow, like a chocolate in a fancy hotel. She dressed herself from head to toe in polymer and synthetic weave. This late in the equinox no light would make it here for months, in any case you could tell the season by how hard the heating vents were creaking. Having done this every day for over a decade, she no longer needed light to do it by. She shook out her big black church robe and hung it from the hook. In the absolute darkness before dawn she brushed her teeth without concern and splashed her face with water, and even went so far as to sweep the dust off the floor of her cell. IN THE MYRIADIC YEAR OF OUR LORD-the ten thousandth year of the King Undying, the kindly Prince of Death!-Gideon Nav packed her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and she escaped from the House of the Ninth. Without spilling any spoilers, Once at Midnight does a phenomenal job of setting up for the events of Once an Ever After to the point where reflecting on this novella is giving me a lot of feels by proxy. I am still not emotionally ok from reading the Once an Ever After novella which is not on Goodreads yet because it attacked me in a lot of emotionally vulnerable places. When the screen fades to black on a fairy tale that's usually it because there usually isn't a story left to tell once the struggle of finding each other is over, but Poston does a nice job of telling a follow up story without unraveling that happily ever after.ĭisclaimer: I received a copy of this novella from Quirk books as part of the pre-order campaign for Bookish & the Beast's paperback edition (book 3 in the Once Upon a Con series). Neither of them needs grand gestures, all they need is each other, Starfield and a vegan taco or two. But what makes their relationship work is what made readers fall in love with their relationship in the first place, their ability to be their authentic, nerdy selves with each other. Once at Midnight tells the tale of Ellie and Darien's first date, and hints at all the struggles their relationship will have following the events of Geekerella long distance, paparazzi, Hollywood/non-Hollywood upbringing and all the nerves that come with first love. This was super authentic to the fairy tale romance of Geekerella while still having a foot in the real world. Rose Lewin, a journalist, is living at the Barbizon, which now houses condos, and working on a story about the hotel’s earlier, more glamorous days. Darby’s story is intertwined with another, set more than 50 years later. She even convinces the shy Darby to perform at a nightclub. As the two become friends, Esme draws Darby into an underworld of jazz and drugs. She’s lonely and struggling when she meets Esme, a young maid who works at the hotel. Her father has died, her mother remarried, and Darby, who doesn’t expect much in the way of marriage prospects, would like to find a way to support herself. In 1952, she moves to New York to enroll in secretarial school. But how does our brain, trapped inside a cranium, know the exact height and angle to raise the cup to bring it to our lips? Even into the modern day, stereotypes have persisted regarding African Americans and superstition, particularly regarding ghost stories. Slave culture melded its assigned Christianity with the spiritual beliefs of Africa, and the result was a highly active paranormal realm. He may be coming out of a long tradition of expository hauntings, but he is also consciously reflecting a key element of the African American cosmology.Īfrican American culture has long been associated with ghosts and ghost stories. Perhaps all our modern Western conceptions about ghosts and the dramatic conventions surrounding their use can be traced to Shakespeare, as well as to Charles Dickens.Īugust Wilson takes a particularly historical and cultural approach to the theatrical ghost in The Piano Lesson. The ghost of Agamemnom in Aeschylus's Oresteia is perhaps one of the earliest examples, but the most foundational today is certainly the ghost in Hamlet. Since the ancient Greeks, the device of an apparition of someone who is deceased has been used to deliver information, create motivation, and pronounce morals. One of the oldest tricks in the playwright's book is the ghost.
